Jihye Park, Since The Day

The nine-year jinx.

It struck me suddenly one day, in the middle of a hard stretch of time. I don't really believe in superstition, but it seemed like it might set my mind at ease to blame it all on my nine-year jinx. Then, a few days later, while spending my leisure time as usual scolding Google Gemini, I realized my nine-year jinx had already passed. Apparently the age in question is counted by social age, not legal age. So the reason for today's hardship sinks back into mystery.

The truth is, extraordinary pain doesn't always come with an extraordinary reason. Every year sets a new record for unbearable heat. Every job brings some unforeseen variable to suffer through. The person you love falls ill at the exact moment you're busiest, or else it's you who gets hurt. So rather than there being some especially difficult period set apart from the rest, it seems more accurate to say that everyone, always, is living inside pain, each in their own shape. How, then, does anyone carry so many trials and keep on living?

Starting from this question, in my family narratives ≪The Son's Time≫ (2022–23) and ≪Let's Go Home≫ (2024), I dealt with consideration, forgiveness, and small, tender care, centered on intimate relationships as slack yet tenacious as a well-worn rubber band. This exhibition, ≪Since The Day≫, expands that idea to address our universal resilience, the resilience that proves the saying: there's always a way through. The recovery I mean here is not the power to return to the past, to who you were before the wound. It refers to a technique of self-protection: rolling the painful memories that threaten to swallow your life into something no bigger than a booger, and setting it aside. I bring to the foreground repetitive acts that pull you in until you lose yourself, humble labors and yearnings that no one else can do for you, that you insist on carrying out yourself, for no particular reason. These are not attempts to forcibly erase or overcome the pasts, wounds, and regrets each of us clings to, but rather the daily traces of living on while holding them close.

Park Jihye focuses on everyday labor that resists reduction to economic value, and on the resilience of the imperfect human being. She finds emotional sediment in the cracks of systems and weaves it together through sculpture, writing, and video. Through persistent, repetitive handwork, filling the layers of time with physical energy, she understands artistic creation as an experience of confronting human physical limits and honest labor. Through performance and practice, better described as strata of process than as finished results, she mourns past histories while expanding the possibility of solidarity.

This exhibition is held as part of the "2026 Young Artist Support Project," selected with the sponsorship of Incheon Metropolitan City and the Incheon Foundation for Arts & Culture.
