Friction   Border

Friction awakens the time that has sunk into places

The body attempts to touch its contours

When the body encounters a place

a gesture is placed within a space

where time has accumulated like layers of sediment

A border buried deep within the space

slowly begins to emerge

The place pushes back against the body

The pallet creaks

Pull

Walk

Stop

Friction brings forth what cannot be seen

through sound and resistance

Friction  Border is a video work that emerged from nearly two decades of ongoing dialogues with people living through the division of the Korean Peninsula.

This prolonged process of dialogue was also a time of recognizing the distance between approaching another person’s experience and truly understanding it. Yet the question remained: what can be done by continuing to place my own body before that distance? From this question, the act of pulling a pallet emerged.

The act of “pulling” in this work originates from an encounter with an artist with whom I had maintained a long dialogue, whose practice involved pulling his own artwork. This experience led me to develop the act as a bodily practice for confronting the distance between oneself and others, as well as the limits of understanding.

The wooden pallet that repeatedly appears in the work is an object originally made for transportation. Here, it remains empty, while being pulled by the body through different places.

The friction that emerges through the encounter between the body and place traces movement, resistance, and a shift in time.

Its resonance brings forth a duration that lingers between the past and the present.

Kikuchi Tomoko

Kikuchi Tomoko graduated from Musashino Art University in 1996 and moved to Hong Kong in 1997, where she began her career as a photographer. She relocated to Beijing in 1999.

Kikuchi’s practice examines how individuals negotiate external pressures, social divisions, and inner conflicts while finding ways of existing within these tensions. Her works reveal the fragile yet persistent presence of those living between society, history, and personal identity.

Through long-term engagement with her subjects, Kikuchi has created works that explore social fractures and individual experiences that have emerged amid rapid modernization. Her subjects have included young LGBTQ people confronting loneliness and contradictions in their lives, fishermen whose livelihoods are shaped by a river and its surrounding histories, and drag queens performing at funerals in rural communities.

Kikuchi has developed a long-term artistic engagement with Korea through research, residency, and production. In 2019, she participated in the SeMA Nanji Residency (Seoul Museum of Art), followed by the Incheon Art Platform Artist Residency in 2020.

Working across photography, video, and performance, Kikuchi’s practice explores the relationship between the body, place, and historical memory.

In 2013, she received the Kimura Ihei Award, followed by the Prix Pictet Japan Award in 2015. Her works are held in collections including Mori Art Museum, Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, Kawasaki City Museum (Kanagawa, Japan), and KADIST Art Foundation.

Friction   Border

Friction Border
